Celebrate Octoberfest at Time Out Market Chicago

Get out your dirndl and lederhosen because Octoberfest is coming to Time Out Market Chicago!

From October 7-9, people can head to the market for a weekend of family festivities and plenty of beer from partner Sam Adams. Oktoberfest, the annual festival held in Munich, Germany, is a celebration of Bavarian culture that attracts millions of attendees. But if you weren’t among those who made the trip across the Atlantic this year, don’t let FOMO get you down. Octoberfest at the Market brings the fun to Chicago.

The event kicks off on Friday, October 7 with a mug-lifting contest. Each contestant will be tasked with holding a mug of beer with their arm outstretched and parallel to the ground. The person who is able to hold the pose the longest will be declared the winner and will receive a prize. For those who would rather drink than test their strength and endurance, there will be a pop-up bar selling $15 Sam Adams Octoberfest commemorative glass steins. Cups can be refilled throughout the weekend for $6.

All alcohol consumption is linked to opening the appetite. Luckily, one of Chicago’s best German-inspired restaurants, Funkenhausen, will also be popping up to help feed hungry stomachs. Chef Mark Steuer draws inspiration from his German and southern roots when creating the imaginative menu for his West Town restaurant, and for Octoberfest he has come up with a mouth-watering range of classic and original bites. You can dip a big pretzel in white Alabama barbecue sauce and chili beer cheese, or devour a kid dressed in sauerkraut and mustard. Other options will include fluffy ricotta balls with confit pork, a “Nashville Not” schnitzel sandwich, and an all-important side dish.potato salad.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a party without music, so we brought in artists to provide some tunes. On Saturdays, local band Die Musikmeisters will set the mood with lively traditional German songs, while Sundays will host a jazz band. And get ready to show off your best dance moves as DJs spin the hits for all three days.

Children should not miss the Octoberfest either. They can have their faces painted, enjoy a winding sculpture from a balloon artist, or sit down for a storytelling session.
