Socorro ISD students continue to help residents prepare their tax returns for free until April 15

High school students in the Socorro Independent School District, through a partnership with GECU and the Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), offer tax preparation services until April 15 in Americas , Eastlake, Socorro, Montwood, El Dorado and Pebble Hills high schools.

Students are enrolled in various vocational and technical education courses. Instructors, as well as students, have obtained basic and / or advanced certification in order to be ready to help community members file their taxes for free.

“These students are more than prepared for this,” said Dahlia Acosta, SISD Career and Technical Education Facilitator. “Not only are most of them business majors, but in order to be tax preparers, they have to take and pass a test.”

Taxpayers with an annual income of $ 60,000 or less can come to any of the sites between 4:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. to file their 1040 EZ, 1040A, and 1040 forms.

Disabled, elderly or limited English-speaking taxpayers who earn more than the maximum income can still be helped with their tax preparations.

“It’s really great to be able to prepare taxes for people,” said Lenea Granados, a business administration student at Eastlake High School. “Not only do I benefit, but my family and the community too. “

The process has been adjusted this year to incorporate safety and social distancing measures. Customers can drop off their documents at high school through a drive-thru.

The teacher / supervisor of the tax preparation program will assign the cases to a student who will prepare the documents.

Clients then have the option of electronically signing or returning to campus to sign their tax return. Throughout the process, the tax preparers will ensure the confidentiality and security of the documents.

“The most important thing is to make sure our students are safe,” said Claudia Rodriguez, business teacher at Eastlake High School. “We have great students who are always ready to come and provide these services for our community. “

People preparing their taxes must bring a photo ID, an original social security card for all those registered in the income tax return, W-2 payslips for the year 2020, 1099-SSA, 1099-R and 1099-G, labor costs, 1095 health coverage, direct deposit information, 1098 for student loans, proof of child care expenses and property tax statements.

In the event of a joint filing, both people must be present.

Additionally, when filing documents, individuals need to know how much money they received from each stimulus check last year.

“It’s heartwarming to see these students so dedicated to providing these services to their community,” said Christopher Nwihim, business academy coordinator at Pebble Hills High School. “They know that during these times we all have to stick together and help each other. “
