Democrats immediately swept the actions of the executive. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, appearing on ABC News’ “This Week” Sunday morning, called them “paltry.”
“Unfortunately, the presidential decrees, described in one word, could be laughable; in three words, impractical, weak and far too narrow, ”said the New York Democrat. “The event at the country club is exactly what Trump does, a great show, but he doesn’t do anything.”
A White House official said on Saturday the president got the “top” by forging ahead with actions and showing just how willing Democrats were to actually negotiate.
“It just shows that Trump is ready to get things done and work on the weekends, unlike Chuck and Nancy,” said Jason Miller, Trump’s campaign adviser, referring to the Minority Leader and President of the House, Nancy Pelosi.
But throughout the negotiations, the president himself was largely absent, although he said he was regularly updated by his chief of staff, Mark Meadows, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. And while the country has been rocked by the pandemic, the president has not spoken to Pelosi since last year and has suggested he won’t do so anytime soon.
“We’ll see what happens, but at the moment they’re not ready,” Trump said, referring to Democratic lawmakers. “And they’re not ready because, frankly, I don’t think they care about people.”
The president was satisfied with the progress of the press conferences, according to collaborators, in particular in the company of members of his club. Some came straight from happy hour with glasses of wine.
Prior to the first press conference, according to CNN, the president was overheard on the microphone telling members, “You will have a chance to meet the fake news tonight. You will see what I have to go through. Who is here? Oh, all of my killers are here, wow. So you will be able to see some of the people we deal with every day.
People in the room booed and hissed when a reporter asked why members of his club seemed to flaunt New Jersey guidelines by rushing into the room. Trump called it a “peaceful protest” at his country club.
“You know, you have an exclusion in the law. It says peaceful protest or political activity, doesn’t it? Trump said. “I call it a peaceful protest because they heard you coming and they know the news is wrong, they know it better than anyone.”
